The Welsh Language Commissioner has announced that the charity meddwl.org will be the chosen charity for the coming year. Through its website, meddwl.org offers a place to get support and information and to share experiences about mental health – all through the medium of Welsh.
The announcement will be made today (Thursday 8 August) at 2 o’clock at the Rhondda Cynon Taf National Eisteddfod on the Welsh Language Commissioner’s stand.
For several years the Commissioner has chosen a charity to support annually following a staff vote. NSPCC Cymru was the charity over the past year and close to £1500 was raised for them which was used to develop Welsh information resources.
In a report published by the Commissioner this week it was noted that, although the services available are improving, more needs to be done to ensure that Welsh language health services are easily available for everyone.
Working with meddwl.org will be an opportunity to raise awareness of the services available, as well as to raise money, says Efa Gruffudd Jones, Welsh Language Commissioner,
“We are very proud to announce that meddwl.org is the Welsh Language Commissioner’s charity of the year this year. Considering that the team of volunteers they have is relatively small, the work they do in actively coordinating the activities is extremely important, and it’s great to see the support they can offer.
“We look forward to working together over the year ahead.”
Non Parry, a meddwl.org ambassador, said,
“meddwl.org was established in order to try to address the lack of Welsh-medium information and resources available to help people living with a mental health condition, as well as their families and friends. This is the first website of its kind that contains information on mental health issues through the medium of Welsh only.
“From the outset the response has been great but it also emphasises the ongoing need for professional support and services through the medium of Welsh, as many who have shared their experiences on the website state that it is so beneficial to receive help in Welsh.”
Manon Elin is one of the founders and trustee of meddwl.org,
“We are extremely proud and grateful to have been chosen as the charity of the year by the Welsh Language Commissioner and we look forward to working together and raise awareness of the need for more resources and professional support through the medium of Welsh.”
The official announcement will be made this afternoon (Thursday, 8 August) at 2 o’clock on the Welsh Language Commissioner’s stand at the Rhondda Cynon Taf National Eisteddfod.
