Hundreds of young people engaged during Road Safety Week 2024

The Council has been out and about in local communities to deliver activities that mark and support national Road Safety Week 2024 – including pedestrian safety and cycling training sessions with young people in our schools.

Each year, Road Safety Week is coordinated across the UK by the charity Brake, and the 2024 edition ran from November 17-23. The theme of this year’s campaign was ‘After the crash, every road victim counts’ – which aims to raise awareness of the devastating toll of road crashes. It also celebrated the people who support families following a road death or a serious injury.

Road Safety Week is an important date in the calendar for the Council’s dedicated Road Safety Team. Each November, officers carry out important educational activities across the County Borough – with much of this key engagement work taking place with young people in our schools. Officers coordinated the following activities to coincide with the 2024 campaign:

  • ‘Kerbcraft’ training with pupils at St Michael’s Catholic Primary School in Treforest – officers have delivered a practical pedestrian training scheme, designed for Year 2 pupils to learn vital skills that will help them stay safe when walking within their local communities. The training included activities out and about in the streets near the school.
  • Balance bike training at Ysgol Afon Wen in Hawthorn – this engaged around 120 pupils from Reception and Year 1, to increase their skills and build their confidence, and balance on a bicycle. The session included practical training with officers, which took place on the school’s yard.
  • Child pedestrian training at Gwauncelyn Primary School in Tonteg and Park Lane Special School in Cwmdare – in these sessions, officers delivered an engaging presentation, including an educational video, about how to stay safe as pedestrians in their local communities.
  • Councillor Andrew Morgan OBE, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and Cabinet Member for Infrastructure and Investment, said: “Each year, the Council participates in Road Safety Week, when officers organise a series of activities and training sessions in local schools and communities – with the aim of teaching key skills to keep residents safe on our roads. It coincides with the work of Brake’s national campaign, which this year is focusing on the consequences of road traffic collisions and the lasting hurt they cause.

“As part of the 2024 activities, our dedicated Road Safety Team delivered pedestrian or cycle safety training at schools in Treforest, Hawthorn, Tonteg and Cwmdare – reaching hundreds of pupils in the process. This is an extension of officers’ close working with our schools all-year round. The team also participates in road safety activities out and about in our communities – including periodic roadside exercises with partners, to ensure motorists are wearing seatbelts and not using their mobile phones while driving.”
